The Big Manchester derby!

Posted by Ali

The most eagerly awaited Manchester derby in years”. Although we seem to have been saying so from the last 4 years or so, but this time the Red and Blue side of the city of Manchester meet for something else than just pride. This time its about possibly proving themselves as the two most lethal teams in the country.

It was back around 1968, when Manchester City and Manchester United literally used to rule English football and that time also mark's the famous European Cup vicotory of Sir Matt Busby’s team. There’s every chance on Earth that the immense World Class talent in the likes of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero can make Manchester the capital of the continent’s football again in the same way that the teams of Colin Bell and George Best did quite a while from now.

Both clubs have already met this season in an Epic Community Sheild encounter, with United coming back from 0-2 down to win 3-2. One interesting fact about United is that in their last 5 derby meetings they have sealed victories in stoppage time!

United’s approach would be looking to get the poor defensive display at Anfield last week behind them while City's deadly attacking mentality this season will almost guarantee that we are going to see plenty of goals in this huge derby match!

United will have to strengthen their defense upto 10 times as City's record this season shows that they have scored at least two in every Premier League game so far which is absolutely massive! And many would say that they’ll have to maintain that record if they’re to win at Old Trafford, something no team has done since Chelsea, back in April 2010, which makes about 37 games ago.

It’s the perfect game for Roberto Mancini to reach 100 as City manager, their 14th boss during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at United and at times two seasons ago it didn’t look like he would reach three figures. Meanwhile, Ferguson is sending a team out for his 43rd Manchester derby – won 24, lost eight is his impressive record as the red half of Manchester has, by and large, dominated.

The gap, however, is closing if not closed – and United’s manager knows it. There’s almost an air of menace in his voice as he says: “They are top of the league. We have to do something about it”.

TEAM NEWS:

Man Utd: No major injury worries. Wayne Rooney most probably will start for the Red Devils along with captain Nimanja Vidic.

Man City: In form striker Mario Balotelli has returned from suspension and will start for the blues. Owen Hangreaves' start is doubtful , however he might be tested in a late practice match.
